New Results on Optimal Area Triangulations of Convex Polygons

چکیده
We consider the problems of finding two optimal triangulations of convex polygon: MaxMin area and MinMax area. These are the triangulations that maximize the area of the smallest area triangle in a triangulation, and respectively minimize the area of the largest area triangle in a triangulation, over all possible triangulations. The problem was originally solved by Klincsek by dynamic programming in cubic time [2]. Later, Keil and Vassilev devised an algorithm that runs in O(n log n) time [1]. In this paper we describe new geometric findings on the structure of MaxMin and MinMax Area triangulations of convex polygons in two dimensions and their algorithmic implications. We improve the algorithm’s running time to quadratic for large classes of convex polygons. We also present experimental results on MaxMin area triangulation.

متن کاملAllocating Vertex π - Guards in Simple Polygons via Pseudo - Triangulations ∗
We use the concept of pointed pseudo-triangulations to establish new upper and lower bounds on a well known problem from the area of art galleries: What is the worst case optimal number of vertex π -guards that collectively monitor a simple polygon with n vertices? Our results are as follows: 1. Any simple polygon with n vertices can be monitored by at most n/2 general vertex π -guards. This bo...
متن کاملOn Decompositions, Partitions, and Coverings with Convex Polygons and Pseudo-Triangles
We propose a novel subdivision of the plane that consists of both convex polygons and pseudo-triangles. This pseudo-convex decomposition is significantly sparser than either convex decompositions or pseudo-triangulations for planar point sets and simple polygons. We also introduce pseudo-convex partitions and coverings. We establish some basic properties and give combinatorial bounds on their c...

متن کاملFlipping edge-labelled triangulations
Flips in triangulations have received a lot of attention over the past decades. However, the problem of tracking where particular edges go during the flipping process has not been addressed. We examine this question by attaching unique labels to the triangulation edges. We introduce the concept of the orbit of an edge e, which is the set of all edges reachable from e via flips. We establish the...
